Artificial Boulders Work Awesome Over Utility Boxes!
Utility boxes come in a variety of different shapes and sizes. From tall and skinny telephone pedestals like the one pictured here, to large square or rectangular electrical boxes. Regardless of their shape and size, they all share something in common: Ugly!
Not many homeowners are too thrilled about having to look at a partially rusted, sun faded slab of steel sitting out in the front yard landscaping. And rightfully so, many of these utility boxes are downright HUGE!
One thing to keep in mind when selecting a fake boulder to cover a utility box is to consider using vents. In many cases the electrical components within the box can be heat sensitive and prone to damage caused my improper ventilation. Especially during the hot summer months. Most electrical companies recommend venting any covers placed over the boxes. Usually 2 or more vents are used as this creates air flow passing through the fake rocks which helps heat transfer out and away from the electrical components within.
Also, when choosing the size of the fake rock to cover the utility box you want to make sure you use the interior dimension charts for the particular rock model you are looking at. When measuring the utilty box you may want to measure the length and width at the base with and without the pad the box sits on. Many times the rock cover can sit on the pad vs have to cover it entirely. It may take an absolute giant of a rock to cover everything including the pad.
As always, if you are doing any digging around the area make sure to get the lines marked first. You don't want to mess with electricity!
